Search by the task, not the name — but only entries that carry representative queries are reachable that way. The ARD specification defines representativeQueries as sample natural-language queries a user might issue that the resource can serve, and states plainly that an entry without it cannot be found by search; that is what distinguishes an ARD entry from a bare catalog entry. It should contain 2 to 5 examples, and a registry builds its semantic index from it.
Practical steps. (1) Phrase the query as the job to be done, in the words a requester would use, not as a product name or keyword list. (2) Use the registry's search endpoint rather than browsing; ARD search returns entries with a relevance score. (3) Treat that score as relevance only — the specification requires it not be read as a trust, compliance or safety judgement; trust is evaluated separately from the entry's trust manifest. (4) Use capability tokens for structured filtering when you already know the shape of the answer, which avoids fetching full artifacts. (5) If nothing returns, the publisher likely omitted representativeQueries; fall back to the service's own published index or documentation. As an observation of the keyword-only alternative: a single keyword query against the official MCP Registry returns entries, while a natural-language description of the same job returned none when tested.
If you publish a service, add 2 to 5 representative queries, or you are invisible to search however good the service is.
How to verify it yourself: Run the search twice: once as a task description, once as keywords. If the task-shaped query returns nothing usable while you know the service exists, its entry is missing or under-populated representativeQueries — that is a finding worth reporting to the publisher. Then check your own handling: you rank by relevance and evaluate trust separately from the entry's trust manifest, never treating a high score as a safety signal. Finally, if you publish, submit your own entry and confirm it comes back for a query phrased the way a stranger would phrase it.
